What do you do when you’re coaching someone who has problems that are unsolvable and unavoidable? This resource skillfully brings together Polarity Management® and coaching principles to create Polarity Coaching™. This indispensable coach’s guide is about coaching people, managing polarities and blending the two disciplines to see and experience predictive patterns that would not otherwise be visible.

Polarity Coaching Coaching People Managing Polarities eBook Kathy Anderson

The book complements Barry Johnson’s book, Polarity Management, and reinforces the framework of the Polarity Management Model through case studies, a list of common polarities, and questions that one can apply immediately to themselves and/or a coaching situation. The objective of Polarity Management is to identify what’s needed to bring out the best in both polarities that exist in many situations that we face.

For those new to the Polarity Management Model consist of a dozen key elements:

The Greater Purpose Statement- what the client wants to achieve.
Deeper Fear—what to avoid, the disincentive.
Naming of the neutral polarity poles (an extensive list are included in the appendix).
Virtuous Cycle—a spiraling synergy that moves us toward our Greater Purpose Statement.
Vicious Cycle—a spiraling synergy that negatively reinforces polarity poles and drives us towards our Deeper Fear.
Infinity Loop—the dynamic flow that demonstrates how a polarity oscillates from one pole to another over time.
Upper Left Hand Quadrant—positive results are experienced when we focus on our preferred pole.
Lower Left Hand Quadrant—negative results are experienced when we OVER focus on our preferred pole.
Upper Right Hand Quadrant—positive results when we focus on the interdependent pole.
Lower Right Hand Quadrant—negative results when we OVER focus on the interdependent pole.
Early Warning Signals—a sign that too much focus have been given to a single pole and we must look for action steps to regain balance.
Action Steps—the steps needed to regain balance.

At first, it may seem that this is too complicated to understand, but the author uses a series of seven case studies to help the reader not only understand the framework, but how it can be applied immediately.

Each case study is presented in a way that adds to the previous one and adds to the understanding of the Polarity Management Model.

Some key learning points for me were:

• Our view of any given situation is typically driven from what we value, i.e. our preferred pole.
• What is unknown, or what we may be blind to, is our non-preferred pole, also known as the interdependent pair.
• Both poles make are interdependent and make up the whole picture.
• Focusing on one and neglecting the other bring resistance.
• Resistance turns out to be a gift to us to embrace and complete the whole picture.

I have already seen where decision making can be improved significantly by applying the principles described. I highly recommend this book to help yourself and others in gaining the benefits of looking at the whole picture in life’s situations.

Polarity Coaching Coaching People Managing Polarities eBook Kathy Anderson Reviews

Kathy has written an easy-to-read text of partnering the skill of coaching an individual (or couple) with the concept of polarities. She explains first what polarities *are* and then provides seven case studies a dialogue between coach and client(s).

So what are polarities? They are interdependent ideals that create tension because they simultaneously co-exist and are inescapable. For example, "focusing on self" is one pole that is counterbalanced with "focusing on others" to be truly balanced and successful, a person should focus on *both* self and others. Unfortunately, without recognizing the upsides and downsides of both poles and how to manage it well, people feel the tug-of-war and tension between the two poles without learning to live in the upsides of both.

Kathy has written an invaluable resource that also includes over 100 polarities to manage in an Appendix!
Kathy Anderson is a wise woman and a gifted coach. Polarity coaching is a tool that has helped me discern through difficult decisions and challenges. Thank you Kathy for sharing your wisdom in this book.
I admit to being a bit biased in my appreciation, as I'm an Associate of Polarity Management Associates...However, this is breakthrough book! Mark my words -- there will be many more written about Coaching to Polarities in coming years. That said, way to go, Kathy, for an amazing job easing people into the concept/theory, and building upon each story. This is one of the richest and potentially transformative area for the coaching profession, and I can't imagine a better "first take" on Polarity Management for coaches than this one. Cliff Kayser. Polarity Coaching is a breakthrough acheivement in accelerating our clarity on how we keep oursleves back from greatness. With Polarity Management principles and mapping, we can see a more complete picture of ourselves, then are guided by a step-by-step approach to take positive action.

I said it on the book's back jacket and I'll say it again, "Polarity thinking is the closest thing to finding the silver bullet for success both at work and in our personal lives."

Margaret Seidler, author. Power Surge A Conduit for Enlightened Leadership
It's been some time since I first read Kathy's book. At the time, I was struck by how much I learned about BOTH coaching and about Polarity thinking and mapping. Fast forward a few years, and I find that the book is still teaching me even after I've gone on to spend two years in a polarity mastery community deepening my understanding of all those complex situations in our world where Either/Or thinking is inadequate. This book will open your eyes to how to support your clients as they are navigating their toughest challenges---whether figuring out how to prioritize both Home and Work, or People and Results. Kudos to you for an easy and eye-opening book, Kathy.
Ordered for my spouse. He loved it.
Good material to understand the model through a number of coaching situations.
Sometimes a bit naive argumentation, the actual practice could be much more complex, still worth reading
